Bio

Kerry Swanson was named College Assistant Director of Athletics in the summer of 2018, after spending six years as the College-Wide Intercollegiate Athletics & Intramurals Coordinator, and ten previous years as a Professional Assistant for Athletics and Physical Education.  Kerry assists the College Associate Director of Athletics in the day to day running of the Athletic Department, including responsibilities in game/practice scheduling, supervising home athletic events, student-athlete academic advisement and website management.  She continues to develop, organize and supervise the college-wide recreation program.

Coach Swanson has had a long, successful coaching career here at Suffolk as the Associate Head Coach of Women’s Basketball.  After her time as a student-athlete and a member of the ’95 Region XV Championship Team, she became a key member of the women’s coaching staff later that same year, working her way up from volunteer assistant to Associate Head Coach.  Coach Swanson has been in charge of every aspect of the women’s highly successful program that has achieved regional and national prominence.  During her 23 year tenure, the women’s program posted a record of 404-130 – a 76% win record, with her teams leading the country in defense 9 times and offense 4 times.  Coach Swanson was involved in scouting, breaking down game film, planning and running practices and game preparation.  Coaching under Head Coach Kevin Foley, she has been a part of the Suffolk WBB program winning a National Championship (2003), 6 Regional Championships, 14 Sportsmanship Awards and 1 National Sportsmanship Award.  She has helped to develop many regional and national stand-outs, which have included 14 All-Americans.  Coach Swanson was involved in all aspects of running the team on a day to day basis – recruitment, registration, academic advisement, financial aid, retention, extra help study groups and student leadership development.  At various times during her tenure, she helped to develop and organize community-based outreach programs providing basketball clinics to local youth groups.

Coach Swanson was also a member of the coaching staff and top advisor of the highly competitive Equestrian Team here at Suffolk.  Suffolk CC was the only 2-year school to compete in the region and has finished in the top 5 for the past 6 years.  Coach Swanson was a member of the Equestrian Team here at Suffolk in the mid-90’s, winning an individual regional title and numerous individual High Point Rider awards. 

In addition to her current position as College Assistant Director of Athletics, Kerry is also a member of several college-wide committees and task forces, including SCCC CARES (Mental Health Awareness Committee); the college-wide LGBTQ+ Task Force; JEDI member; BASIC Needs Committee member; and Region XV DEI Committee member.  Kerry has also been asked to serve on several community based health committees.  She is an adjunct professor, teaching classes in College Seminar and Aspects of Coaching. 

Kerry, a Sachem High School graduate and Suffolk CC alumnus, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education from York College and a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Canisius College.
