Softball off to NJCAA World Series for 3rd year in a row
The Suffolk Softball Team has earned its 3rd consecutive trip to the NJCAA World Series. This past weekend they traveled to Anne Arundel CC to play in the District H Championship as part of a 4 team tournament that included Region XXI winner Massasoit CC, Region XX winner Anne Arundel CC and Region XX runner up Butler County College.
Suffolk had to play Butler in game 1 and needed a "walk off" win to beat Butler in the bottom of the 7th. Karisa Lawrence doubled in Cori Augustine for the winning run. Macy Kane got the win as she came in to relieve Lawrence and threw a scoreless 7th inning by striking out the side. Lawrence went the 1st 6 innings giving up 3 unearned runs with 8 strikeouts while only giving up 5 hits. She was also 3 for 3 in the game. Meagan McClinchey homered for the Sharks.
In game 2, Suffolk played host Anne Arundel who knocked out Massasoit by a score of 10-2. Macy Kane got the start and threw a complete game with 9 strikeouts, Macy also drove in 2 runs in the game with a double. Maison Zumpol was 2 for 3 in the game and Karisa Lawrence had another RBI. With the win that put the Sharks in the Championship round and needing only 1 win to reach their 3rd consecutive World Series.
That win came in the 1st game on Sunday with the Sharks knocking out Anne Arundel with a 6-1 win. Karisa Lawrence threw a complete game with 13 strikeouts and only gave up 1 unearned run. Sabrina Burrus had an RBI 2 out double in the 1st and after a Meagan McClinchey walk, Cori Augustine sent a 2 run double over the left fielder's head to give Suffolk a 3-0 lead. Neither team would score again until the 7th. In the 7th, Hazel Hernandez singled, Alyssa Kelly reached on a bunt single, Maison Zumpol singled and after an out Macy Kane hit a 3 run double to right center to give the Sharks a 6-0 lead. Anne Arundel loaded the bases in the 7th, but could only scratch 1 run across. Lawrence struck out the side sending the Sharks to Minnesota for their 3rd straight trip to the NJCAA World Series.
Seeding for the World Series will be announced on Monday May 14th.
